Types of Hangars We Erect

Our pre-engineered metal building contractors have experience building several types of airplane hangars, including:

Freestanding

Freestanding airplane hangars are built to accommodate a single airplane, jet, or helicopter in one large, open space. The size of a freestanding hangar can be adjusted to meet your particular requirements. Smaller freestanding hangars are usually used for housing private aircraft, while larger versions are ideal for maintenance and repair facilities.

Consecutive Rectangular

Similar to the freestanding hangar, a consecutive rectangular hangar is built with four exterior walls and a roof. However, this type of hangar also has interior walls that create individual bays for storing multiple aircrafts.

Back to Back

Essentially two consecutive rectangular hangars placed side by side, the back-to-back hangar increases the number of aircraft bays to house twice as many airplanes. Back-to-back hangars will need to have access from both sides, as the design includes doors that face both directions.

Standard T Hangars

Standard T hangars feature bays that are wider in the front than in the back with alternating doors on either side. These hangars are great for fitting more aircraft when storage space is limited.

Nested T Hangars

Designed to save hangar space and reduce taxiway needs, nested T hangars are built with the same design as standard T hangars but are shorter, wider, and staggered to fit more aircraft.

Custom Design

For added flexibility or to incorporate additional rooms for repair work or a business storefront, you can opt for a custom designed hangar. Of course, it’s critical that custom designed hangars adhere to FAA and other regulatory standards.

Airplane Hangar Customization and Common Features

Once you’ve selected the airplane hangar type that works best for your needs, it’s time to think about a few other common airplane hangar features.

Hangar Doors

It’s important to choose a hangar door that best meets your airplane hangar type and requirements. Some common hangar door types include horizontal bifold doors and vertical lift doors.

Electrical Considerations

It’s important to consider the electrical components needed for your airplane hangar and related equipment. A few key electrical components to consider include lighting, HVAC system, and technology such as computer systems, diagnostic equipment, and machinery.

Cladding and Insulation

In order to protect both the exterior and interior of your airplane hangar, cladding and insulation are essential. Cladding will help protect your metal airplane hangar from corrosion, while insulation will help control the interior temperature and save money on energy bills.
